Spinners Waltz

My videographer friend Philip Luckey stopped by rehearsal for the Chattanoga Boys Choir Singing Christmas tree last night. He quickly set up two cameras and caught a couple of moments from the show, which opens today.

One of the highlights for me is performing an original piece with Ballet Tennessee. The song is Spinners Waltz and I wrote it for my daughter Missy.

I wrote this song when Missy was around four years old. She was going through a phase where she could not be persuaded to wear a dress unless we could convince her it had good 'spin value'. Those of you who've had daughters probably understand instantly what I'm talking about. Why wear something as silly as a dress if it doesn't stick out like a ballerina when you spin?

About this same time my son Jeremy was taking Suzuki violin lessons. One morning they were dressed for church and on the front porch fiddling and spinning. I grabbed the camera and used that picture inspiration.

Here's a YouTube video from last night. It is a rehearsal so the takes not perfect but it will be even harder to get video during the show. Enjoy!

Comments:
So are you back to the D600 or are you just using it because its easier to play Spinner's on it in that key than on the other one?

Brad,

Glad you asked. I use whichever instrument is right for the job. I find that since most of my Christmas arrangements were done on the D600 it is just easier to play them without thinking about it much. That's the hardest part about seasonal music. You get really good at it by the end of the season and then forget about it in the next 9 months.

Hey Mr. Landrum. Just stopping by to say hey and to say the video looks pretty good! I took your word and checked it out after we talked today. I really like the particular piece played. The fact that it is your own is great. I write a bit of music myself, lyrics mostly. It's really cool how those little things can inspire so much. Here is to
a good show tomorrow! Hope all goes well for us!

So how can I audition to dance in your act?

Thanks Andrew. This had been a fun show for me and you guys sound great!

Mark,

Auditions are next Tuesday. I'm looking for someone to wear a horse costume and dance to sleigh ride.

You in?

Dan

Mr. Landrum? Hah! How much did that cost you? I'll pay twice that to see Mark dance in any costume.

He must be a student. Mark makes us call him "Doctor Mister Wade B.M. Sir Esquire". Most of us call him Mr. B.M. for short.

Great work last night Dan, we picked up your winder mix album and know for certain it will be parked in our cd player until new years. I'm a former Chattanooga Boys Choir Member and was part of the same show you were a part of some 10 years ago. It certainly brought back memories... bravo!

I'm now handling the news duties for US-101 in Chattanooga... if you ever put together some bluegrass... give us a call! :) Merry Christmas.

US 101! That's my old gig!

Treat it kindly.

I just had to chime in here and tell you that my daughter LOVES your Spinners Waltz video! She will go change into her "ballerina" outfits (yes, she has more than one!) and dance around the room with your video! Her outfits are multiple dresses and skirts with the ever so important "spin factor"!

Mark in a horse costume.......Yup! I wanna see that one too! Will he be the front or back end of the horse? Tee hee! Nutin but love Mark!

Hey your video clip was great. someone sent it to me on youtube.

I'd love to see Mark dance too!! hah!

Dan,

We finally got high-speed, so I am finally starting to look at stuff like this video.

It made me cry.

I danced in college -- modern, but with a strong ballet influence from the instructors -- I miss it. There's something about dance that is so much more fully expressive than even music and art are.

And now I have a daughter, and maybe some day she will be a spinner, too.

Dan, I just connected with your site via Garrett Viggers, and am looking forward to hearing more if you keep your journal up to speed.

Hi Dan, The Spinners Waltz is beautiful. May I ask what stand is underneath that D600? I also saw another picture of this stand with you playing at NormalPalooza (circa '06) It looks like a QuickLok, but I'm guessing at best. I am searching for for a stage stand. Reliable, sturdy and no-nonsense.

And I just heard about the magazine, Dulcimer Players News - cool!

Lula,

The stand is a Dusty Strings Tri'Stander. You can get them directly from me, just drop me an email, or directly from Dusty Strings. www.dustystrings.com

Glad you enjoyed the video!
